• Environment: After the workspace is clear and you are ready for the job place a sheet or tarp under the initial area of fence being superior and move it under each section being worked on. This will preclude as best as possible fence debris from dirtying surrounding vegetation. This will especially come in handy when painting, as drops will fall to the ground and can be difficult to take off from flagstone, cement walls or walkways.

• Color: Painting the fence black or brown will blend it in with the view of your home. Painting it silver will make it stand out more. While there are many colors to select from fence painting is not a fashion statement so don't think you're going to repaint it next year because magenta is no longer in. Make a responsible decision that you can live with for years to come.

On the job steps:

• Cleaning: Initially the fence itself needs to be cleared of rust or other debris. Use a wire brush to scrub all dirty parts together with links and posts. recognize the fence carefully, as any residue will affect the nature of the new coat of paint. If the qoute is highly bad you could rent a sand blaster to do the job.

• Primer: once the fence is clean, prime highly decayed areas with a rust or corrosion inhibitor. If you need, prime the whole fence, as it will enhance the hereafter paint job and protect from new rust. However, read primer directions as some rust-inhibiting primers should only be used in places where there was actual rust. Note: Don't begin painting until the primer is dry.

• Paint: A good choice is Rust Oleum's Chain Link Fence Paint but it only comes in silver. Using a paint roller, apply carefully. For posts and hinges use a brush.

• Spraying: Some would say a paint sprayer is easier than painting manually but it doesn't necessarily do a better job and the over spraying leads to a waste of a lot of paint.

Finally, if you're going to do this scheme it's always good to find a family member or friend to help you. Not only will the job go faster but you have more of a opportunity catching links that need more attention on the spot rather than noticing them the next day on your own.

Also, if your fence runs along a neighbor's property but fully on your land it's still a good idea to give the neighbor a heads up concerning your plans. Let him know you're taking all the precautions to limit a mess and damage to the landscaping.
